WWI monument, Dolní Hbity

Stone monument with two metal shields with 67 names of fallen soldiers. At the sockle of monument is a next shield emtioning that those fallen were part of the k.u.k 102. Infantery Regiment. Later added completely on top in center is also a plate honoring a single soldier from the municipality who was member of the Czech Legion.

State of repair/preservation

Partly repair necessary, not critical (yet). The municipality also want to move the monument to a more suitable location.

Historical WWI Context

Men from the region were conscripted into the k.u.k. 102. Infantry Regiment. This was the last regiment established before the outbreak of the war; its main center was Benesov and later Prague. Since no fighting took place in the Czech lands, most soldiers were shipped to the different fronts.

From personal history we know that that one of the soldiers died in a POW camp in Serbia in 1915.

Interesting is that in the same monument soldiers from both the k.u.k 102 IR and from the Czech Legion are honored. The Czech Legion were soldiers fighting as an independent group on the side of the Allied forces, basically opposing the Austro-Hungarian forces.
