Historical WWI Context
On the 13th of December 2001 in connection of the 85 anniversary from the marine fight near Balchik during the WW1, on the town Central Square a monument of the Bulgarian coastal artillery was raised. The square itself started to carry the name of the hero of this epic battle “Captain Georgi Radkov”. The mounted gun is an exponent of the Varna Marine Museum and as a result of the taken initiative from the Balchik people it was turned into a symbol of the memorial place dedicated to the defense of the town in the WWI.
The monument is stylized model of the Bravery medal with a 100 mm D-50 Schneider Gun in the middle - one of the two guns of the “Nadezhda ” battlecruiser. During the war Russian troops in the North Dobrudzha received strong support on the part of the Black Sea Fleet. On the 13th of December 1916 Russian warships opened for the third time fire in the port of Balchik. Bombing causes not only enormous material damages but also innocent casualties among the civil population. Damages in the town would have been far greater, but the coast troops led by the Captain Georgi Radkov focused themselves the fire of the Russian ships and doing this they saved Balchik from total destruction.
After the battle the warship was disarmed and its guns are mounted in the „St.Trinity” area near Galata. Later during the war they were transported and put on a position east from Balchik for the coast defense of the town from the sea attacks.
