First World War Military Cemetery Solkan, Slovenia
The Austro-Hungarian First World War military cemetery lies on the left bank of the Soča, just by the railway, between Solkan and the railway bridge across the Soča. Buried in the cemetery are the Austro-Hungarian solders who fell on the Gorizia bridgehead during the initial six Isonzo battles (until August 1916, when the Italian army conquered Mt. Sabotin). The original wartime layout of the cemetery has mainly been preserved, with the exception of the extreme edge of the inclination towards the Soča, which has been altered because it collapsed during the bombing of the railway and the Solkan bridge in the Second World War. Supposedly, 5103 soldiers were buried in the original cemetery. In the 1930s, the cemetery was enlarged since mortal remains of the Austro-Hungarian soldiers were transferred to it from the abandoned Italian military cemeteries. A central monument and a tomb of unknown soldiers are also an integral part of the cemetery.
