Historical WWI Context

When the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy first concurred Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1878, the main goal of the Monarchy was to industrialize Bosnia and make it go side by side with other European countries. The Monarchy settled in and created in every larger city a military headquarters for its needs and purposes. Zenica was no exception. The Austro-Hungarian Monarchy built its military barracks in Zenica, in what is now known as Travnička street, and it had many objects in the complex such as: Barracks, training facilities, accessory facilities, and across the street, they had a building which was used for the economical purposes. Also, next to those facilities, the Austro-Hungarian soldiers and employees of the barracks planted vegetables for the needs of the headquarters. During the World War One, this headquarters served its intended purpose, and it was a strategic centre for the Monarchy. From there, soldiers were assigned to fronts and battlefields, orders were given and relevant information acquired and processed. After the war, these barracks were used by the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians (Kingdom of SCS) for a certain period of time, and during that period they have erected a monument for the soldiers that freed the country from its occupiers. After that, it was demolished and over time turned into many objects such as the mentioned Institute, an elementary school, parking lots, restaurants, etc.
