Historical WWI Context
Location of this street is part of the “Sarajevo assassination” heritage. It is a street, built during austro-hungarian rule, along with regulation of the Miljacka riverbed from 1882 to 1910. It was named Appel quai at the time of the assassination, and was the official route for archdukes and countess car ride from Filipovic-lager to Sarajevo City Hall. It was on Appel quai in front of the new Post Office building when postmaster Gaberle handed a telegram to Sophie from her children, and more eastward where the first assassination attempt was made by Nedjeljko Čabrinović. Also, on their way back from the City Hall, the couple was shot by Gavrilo Princip right on the corner of Appel quai and (then) Franz Joseph street.
