Historical WWI Context
Number of different memorial plaques were erected and subsequently removed at the site of the 1914 Sarajevo assassination, through various times in 20th century. At first, two memorial plaques were erected between 1914 and 1917, one on the nearby building, other on the roadway. Both were removed after the fall of Austro-Hungarian empire. During the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Kingdom of Yugoslavia), another memorial plaque in cyrillic letters was erected on the building, however, was removed in 1941 and allegedly presented to Adolf Hitler. After the WWII, another memorial plaque bearing text was erected on the façade of the building together with a plaque of Princip’s footprints embedded in the pavement, but that was also removed following 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Today, there is a memorial plaque in the façade with English and Bosnian text commemorating the assassination.
