Historical WWI Context

In the autumn of 1916, in the days of the Romanian army's retreat in front of a much greater enemy, bloody battles took place in the surroundings of Brasov, in an area also known as "Tara Barsei". On 7 October 1916, the battle for defending Brasov began. A company made up of several Romanian soldiers had the mission to defend at any price the entrance to Brasov from Bartholomew neighbourhood. After two days of resistance, 650 Romanian soldiers died. A master regent who took place in this campaign engraved the following words on a cigarette case: "Traveller, go and tell the Spartans that we died here, as their laws prescribed." Then, followed a strategic withdrawal of the Romanian Army from Transylvania back to the Carpathian ridges.
