Historical WWI Context
The monument was erected in honour of the Bulgarian troops, who fought fierce battles near Dobrich on 5-7 September 1916. At the place where he is, fought soldiers from the regions of the towns of Oryahovo and Knezha, as well as the two batteries of the 5th Artillery regiment. For three days, 11 attacks of the united Romanian-Russian troops were repelled and Dobrich was saved. In 1942, on the initiative of teachers and pupils from the Dobrich mixed high school "Tsar Boris the Third", funds were raised and a cross-monument was built in honor of the victims of this site (Devnya mound) in 1916. The discovery took place on 15.05.1942 In the presence of students from Oryahovo, Knezha, Dobrich and their brass orchestras. At the base of the monument are placed bags with soil from the native places of the heroes, and the monument is overflowed with water from the Danube River. Over time, the monument has been forgotten and partially destroyed. This also applies to the mound itself. An initiative committee of 8 people: Dr. Manol Iliev, Nikolay Balkanski, Dr. Kosta Dzhelebov, Dimitar Pazvantov, eng. Petar Savov, Zdravko Shterev, Georgi Chunchukov and Aleksander Aleksiev, took the initiative for the restoration of the monument and its re-opening. As a result of intensive work on 6th of May 1999 the monument was opened for the visitation in the park of the former division 32 050 (airfield Dobrich). After the closure of the division, the monument was moved to the park near the Municipality Dobrichka (East).
