Monument-Mausoleum of the WWI Heroes, Targu Neamt, Romania
The Monument-Mausoleum (dedicated to mountain hunters) was inaugurated on June 29, 1939, and is the work of architect Theodor Burca. It is both a monument (as it is an architectural and artwork of great proportions meant to commemorate the glorious and heroic sacrifices that took place during the First World War) and a mausoleum (as it is a great burial monument, erected in the memory of mountain hunter heroes who fell on the battlefront of the Reunification War and buried in the crypt that is at the base of the monument).
The work has a 16-foot socket, whose shape suggests an observation gazebo. On the sides are three marble slabs: one reminds of July 27, 1917, when the mountain hunters left the front line; the second, a large plate contains the name of the 72 "mountain hunters fallen on the field of honour", and the third one includes the text dedicated to the monument's unveiling.
On the base there are two bas-reliefs: one presents a winged woman who symbolizes Romania. She is dressed in Roman clothes, featuring a sword at her hip and is presented in the act of jumping off a mountain peak. In the left hand, she holds Romania's coat of arms on her shoulder, and in her extended right hand, she has a laurel crown.
The second bas-relief presents Romanian troops during battle. On the upper stage of the socket, there is an eagle that takes its flight to the west, the direction in which the soldiers of the first battalion of mountain hunters headed to the front of the battle. In the north, the crypt of the mausoleum takes the shape of a grave, adorned with a white cross placed on the black slab.
