World War I Memorial Tablet - University of Pécs

A relief made of bronze with a red marble frame. It was placed at the University of Pécs in 1930 and made by Sándor Gecső.

The inscription is:

"A M. Kir. Erzsébet Tudományegyetem, valamint a volt Pozsonyi és a Pécsi Jogakadémiák Hősi halottai." 1914-1918 

/Heroic dead of the Erzsébet University of the Kingdom of Hungary, and the University of Pozsony and the Academy of Law in Pécs." 1914-1918/

The inscription is written on the left side of the relief, while on the right side there are three Hungarian soldiers in helmet with bayonets. First of them turn his head to the right "looking out " from the relief, while the one in the middle had been shot and move his hands to his chest, his head falls back. At the down side of the relief Dergré Lajos is portrayed with an inscription on his both sides: "He only loved his country more than his science. Died heroic death in front of his squadron by Uzsák. "("Tudományánál csak hazáját szerette jobban. Hősi halált halt százada élén Uzsoknál.")

Historical WWI Context

Degré Lajos, who was portrayed on the relief was a professor of criminal and procedural law at the university in Bratislava. After a half year of starting his work he went for a soldier at the beginning of the World War I and falls on the battlefield. 

As the legal successor of the Hungarian Royal Erzsébet Univeritsy the University of Pécs wished to find a worthy place for the memorial to commemorate the heroic dead of the university.

The city of Pécs is home to countless tourist attractions. It has been inhabited since the Roman ages, when it was called Sopianae. Another important element of Pécs’ heritage is Zsolnay porcelain, their legacy being carried on and rejuvenated by the founding of the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, which has become a new cultural scene in the city. Pécs can be accessed by train and coach also. InterCity trains leave from Budapest, Keleti pályaudvar (Eastern railway station) every two hours. The trip is 3 hours long. Museums Private Collections

There is a museum in Szekszárd (60 km north of Pécs in Tolna county) dedicated to the infantryman of Tolna county who served in the 1st and 2nd World Wars.
