Fort Vraca in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Built in 1898 by Austro-Hungarian army as a part of the Sarajevo fortification system, Fort Vraca was one of the bigger forts. It hosted Austro-hungarian army up to 1918. Situated in the southwest line of Sarajevo’s Austro-Hungarian fortified defences, Fort Vraca dominates the Vraca pass, on the western ridge of Trebević mountain.

Historical WWI Context

Built in 1898 by Austro-Hungarian army as a part of the Sarajevo fortification system, Fort Vraca was one of the bigger forts. Situated in the southwest line of Sarajevo’s Austro-Hungarian fortified defences, Fort Vraca dominates the Vraca pass, on the western ridge of Trebević mountain. In Austro-hungarian military it was categorized as a premament Fort (Werk). It hosted artillery and infantry until 1918, and had played a role in the events of 1914-1915. In 1981, it was made into a memorial complex for the victims of the fascist terror in Sarajevo from 1941 to 1945. It is now in neglected, partially derelict state.
