World War I Military Cemetery 1. – public cemetery of Pécs

The monument was made of pyrogranite by György Kungl in 1998. As a part of the public cemetery of Pécs there is a detached plot for the victims of the world wars. The creator wished to commemorate the dead of the Great War with the monument depicting a double-headed eagle, symbolising reality and unreality at the same time. The base of the statue is a cross indicates the resurrection of Jesus. Eagles - or the double-headed eagle - lean against this cross referring to a “turul”, the ancient bird of Hungary, the symbol of two characters: heroism and courage. It’s also reminds of a phoenix, that burns than reborn from the ashes as the symbol of immortality.
