Historical WWI Context

Taking into consideration that Žepče, alongside Zavidovići, Olovo and Begov Han were one of the main providers of wood for the Austro – Hungarian Army, it is also important to emphasize that many of the male inhabitants of Žepče served in the army of the Austro – Hungarian Monarchy. In order to strengthen the army’s position in Žepče, in case the enemy attached, the Monarchy’s military headquarters ordered bunkers to be made on key points at the entrance of the town in order to prevent a surprise enemy attack. That is how the bunkers in question were made and used during the war. Nowadays, it is inaccessible and very hard to find. They are overgrown with shrubs and bushes and the ownership of the land has still not been dissolved, and it can be said that they are in “no man’s land”.
