Monument of the Cavalry Heroes of the World War One in Oituz, Bacau County, Romania

The Monument of the Cavalry Heroes of the World War I is located on the Cosna Hill in Oituz and was erected in 1924 by the "Cult of Heroes" Society, with public support. It was the result of the work done by the sculptor Vasile Ionescu Varo.

The monument has the shape of a obelisk made of stone and placed on a cement and stone pedestal. At the base of the obelisk are an attacking cavalier, a horse and a heraldic shield with Romania's coat of arms made of bronze, a material from which the eagle in the upper part is also made.

At the inauguration, on the main facade the monument was placed in the upper part of a bronze medallion with the faces of King Ferdinand I and Queen Mary - embodied as a charity figure. Between this and the heraldic shield was a pink marble memorial plate, which was engraved with the following letters in gold:

"In memory of the heroes of Division 1 of the Cavalry, Regiments 1, 4, 5, 9, 10 of Rosiori, 3 of Calarasi and 1 Pedestrian Cavalry, Company 1 and the Company 2 of Cyclists, the Riding Artillery Division, Brigade II of Calarasi, Regiment 7 and 9 of Calarasi, fallen during the War of Reunification of the Nation of 1916-1918".

Another plate, located on the left side, marked the most important localities where the Division 1 of the Cavalry. On the base, on a second stage, there is an arrangement featuring a sword and some oak leaves.

Historical WWI Context

The monument is erected in honor of the Romanian heroes who lost their lives during the battle of Oituz during the First World War, a military confrontation that took part between the Romanian army supported by the Russian Empire troops against the German and Austro-Hungarian troops. It was this battle that stopped the German-Austro-Hungarian offensive that was aimed at penetrating Moldova and wiping out Romania from the War. (

The nearest railway station is in Targu Ocna, on the railway line Adjud - Siculeni (Miercurea Ciuc). There are four direct trains a day that connect Targu Ocna and Siculeni (Miercurea Ciuc), and eight trains a day between Targu Ocna and Adjud. (

There are also bus / minibus journeys from Oituz to / from larger towns and cities such as Onesti, Brasov, Comanesti, Moinesti and even bus journeys towards international destinations such as large cities in Europe. (
